Description: GOAL: To describe the processes of gamete transport, fertilization, blastocyst implantation, formation and function of the placenta, regulation of maternal and fetal metabolism during gestation, parturition and lactation. 6.4 OBJECTIVE: To describe how placental and maternal hormones regulate maternal physiology during and after pregnancy. 6.4.1 Maternal Physiology (Animation) -How does a pregnant female adjust physiologically to the metabolic and nutritional requirements of the growing fetus? -How does the fetal-placental unit obtain a sufficient blood supply? -How soon after parturition do maternal metabolism and reproductive function return to those typical of the non-pregnant state?
