Description: GOAL: To describe the processes of gamete transport, fertilization, blastocyst implantation, formation and function of the placenta, regulation of maternal and fetal metabolism during gestation, parturition and lactation. 6.5 OBJECTIVE: To describe the processes by which parturition is initiated and proceeds to expel the fetus. 6.5.1 Parturition (Animation) -Has the ultimate signal for initiation of labor been identified? -How does the ratio of maternal plasma progesterone to maternal plasma estradiol change in the third trimester of pregnancy? -What hormones enhance uterine contractions and where are they produced?
