Abstract
Description
This is a bound collection of fourteen Italian engravings dating to the 18th century. The collection was created by Piranesi who was a classical archaeologist who studied buildings. This book is popularly used for classes and shown during library tours. The prints within contain imagery of imaginary prisons with designs referred to as capricci, which refers to images of whimsical aggregates of monumental architecture and ruin. These prints may have influenced later artistic movements, such as surrealism. Originally, the prints would not have been produced with the intention to be bound. Rather, they would have likely been marketed as flat objects housed within a portfolio.
