Abstract
Description
This is an encyclopedia of practical mechanics and electricity that features fourteen colored, interactive flap illustrations of various mechanical equipment, such as motors and locomotives. This volume is a quarter leather binding with a textured green cloth covering the boards. The upper cover cloth is embossed with Art Nouveau motifs and the title, author, and printer are stamped in gold. The lower cover is embossed with a round emblem. The leather spine is blind tooled with a similar Art Nouveau motif as the upper cover and the title and author are stamped in gold. There are two commercially made endbands stuck onto the spine of the text block.
This volume has green and white made-in endsheets with a cloth hinge (the green covering cloth) that extends under the pastedowns and around the flyleaf. These endsheets feature the same emblem embossed on the loser cover. The text block consists primarily of thick board supports containing the illustrations. These boards are each attached with white cloth hinges. The recto of each board has a flap illustration, and the recto of the prior board leaf has a numbered list of the various components of the flap illustration. The half title page, title page, and contents page are printed on a beige machine-made paper. The last illustration (Plate XIV) includes a moving lever component, attached with a brass fastener, along with flap components.
