Abstract

Description

This is a mid‐19th century full leather tightback binding. Prior to treatment in the Lab, both the front and back boards were fully detached from the binding, with only the back board remaining. Very few spine fragments remained, but there was evidence of four false raised bands. The textblock was sewn on cords and remained intact with the sewing appearing to be stable throughout. The textblock is comprised of 360 pages and contains medical text and 80 illustrated plates. Treatment consisted of removing leather spine fragment, dry surface cleaning the textblock, creating a sympathetic cloth case with false raised bands and housing the book and the original, detached board in a custom cloth covered clamshell box.
